Born in Saigon, Vietnam, on November 4, 1966, Dr. Hoan Pho and his family faced the tumult of war, escaping on its very final day to forge a fresh existence in the United States. Quickly learning the values of hard work, discipline, and the importance of seizing every opportunity, these principles would become the cornerstones of Dr. Pho's approach to medicine.
Relocating to Texas at the age of 9, Dr. Pho eagerly adopted the Lone Star State as his home. As a student, he consistently demonstrated high academic achievement, graduating as Class Valedictorian from Robert E. Lee High School before progressing to Trinity University. His distinguished academic journey continued as he achieved an Honors Degree in Biochemistry Magna Cum Laude and subsequently graduated from UTHSC Medical School in 1993.
After completing residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Dr. Pho widened his professional horizons by leaping into private practice, where he has now spent more than 25 years. His holistic approach to healthcare, emphasizing nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle, sets him apart and underpins his work as a Board Certified professional in Internal Medicine.
Dr. Pho’s wealth of experience extends to his role as a mentor and educator, guiding Medical Students, Allied Health Professionals, and Nurse Practitioners, and further enriching his career with an Associate Professor role at UTHSC Medical School and Nursing School. Mrs. Emily Bigler is a native Texan who was born in San Antonio. She has a passion for learning and attended the magnet school, Communication Arts High School. While attending school, she was drawn to the art of nursing and completed a history project featuring the esteemed nurse and founder of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton. This project was entered into the National History Fair where she competed with other students across the nation. This project inspired Emily to pursue nursing and she spent her final year in high school facilitating care as the school nurse’s first student assistant. She graduated summa cum laude in her high school class and was ranked #9 out of a graduating class of 650 students.
While pursuing her Bachelor of Science Degree (BSN) in Nursing, Emily worked as a caregiver for older adults. While caring for this population, she refined her attention to detail and prevented numerous infections from diabetic complications. She graduated with honors and then went on to pursue care for postpartum women, newborns, and pregnant women at the hospital. During this time, Emily was dedicated to expanding her knowledge in an effort to enhance professional development and patient care. Emily knew that she would need to further her education to achieve her ultimate goal of caring for patients as a nurse practitioner.
Emily returned to school in 2020 to pursue her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree.
She graduated with honors and received recognition from the Dean of Nursing. Her final capstone project featured mindfulness techniques for women with opioid use disorder. This project was accepted into two conventions including the UT Health 16th Annual Community Service Learning (CSL) and International Sigma 47th Biennial Convention.
Emily currently lives with her husband and best friend, Alan and their two dogs, Patti and Lilo. Emily and Alan enjoy taking Patti and Lilo on walks, hiking, and enjoying nature.
